there will be to pin ryan down on defense, and prevent him from talking about the things he knows best, which are medicare, taxes and financial stuff, the sort of things that romney opened up for him in that initial debate. romney unlocked paul ryan to a certain extent and now he can leverage him if ryan can get the space to talk about it in the debate. >> paul: mary. >> i think what you can expect from paul ryan, he will repeat over and over again, the 716 billion dollars in medicare cuts that obama is putting on people who are right now relying on medicare. and he will show, he will try to show that his plan will actually save medicare while obama will destroy it. i think that's his greatest edge and that's where he's going to go. >> paul: he's got a delicate task because i think he has to defend, jason, i think he has to defend romney against what will be biden's task even as he turns around and tries to go after the president's agenda while showing his own competence on substance, on these issues, that's a more complicated taste and biden is basically going to be all in assaulting romney.

had been on such an offensive all of a sudden has to be on defensive and he doesn't handle it very well. >> john: there were several things that hart didn't handle very well. >> he was reeling and we came right back in which was the red phone. >> most powerful responsibility in the world lies in the hand that picks up this phone. >> john: they used emotion to sell the idea that gary hart was style and not substance. >> vote as the future of the world is at stake. >> john: decades later. your children are safe and asleep. >> hillary clinton's use the same theme to attack barack obama. >> in this case it was barack obama. we said to gary hart it's 2:00 in the morning. yeah, did they steal it from us? absolutely. >> john: it's more likely to be a direct attack. americans say we don't like these attacks, but they do work. in the swing states they now run all the time. >> if you are hearing me approve this message, believe me so am i. >> i'm barack obama, eye i'm mitt romney and i approve this message. >> john: however, most of you won't see those messages. you have been excluded. i'll

was a little defensive, ryan was in defending his budget proposals from the past and we got distracted from that. on whole on domestic policy i should ryan had a good night. >> will this have an impact on the presidential race, dan, or are we going to forget about this except for the saturday night clips on joe biden's antics? >> i think it will have an affect on the race. voters are paying close attention to what these people are saying in terms of why is the economy behaving as poorly as it is. if you think, connect this to what barack obama himself has been doing out there, in his stump speech he primarily mocks and ridicule mitt romney rather than talking about his own record. and biden's weird performance was kind of a piece of that technique that they have adopted. i think voters are looking for something deeper from the president now. the burden is on him to show it next week. >> no hint of a second term agenda in biden's -- >> no, not at all. i think he showed president obama that you can be aggressive, you can defend. >> so romney ought to be on notice, he's coming at you? >> right
